Lessons learnt from an MBA – Aim high!

A few weeks ago, I finished my MBA degree from Oxford University.

One of the most important lessons I learnt is this: Aim high. Constantly being surrounded by smart, driven, and passionate people showed me what high levels of excellence can be achieved with hard work, persistence, and a little luck. Two years ago, nothing indicated that life would hold an Oxford degree in store for me. What an incredible opportunity! Yet, I had never even considered that a world class university was an option. It took someone else to remind me how much I could achieve, if I only believed in myself (I am overjoyed to say that I married that someone a month ago!). And so, accept nothing less than excellence from yourself. The rest will follow.

In this moment of transition from university to work life, a quote I recently heard burns sharply in my mind. It’s by the brilliant George Bernard Shaw:

“Life is not a brief candle. It is a splendid torch that must be made to burn as brightly as possible before it is handed on to the next generation”

So light your torch. Make it burn as brightly as possible. Aim high, and accept nothing less than excellence from yourself. The rest will follow. You will only find out what you are capable of if you try!
